Turkey’s First Private Geothermal Power Plant, DORA-1, Came to Life with Us.
Menderes Geothermal Elektrik Üretim A.Ş., headquartered in Aydın, was established in 1999. Established for the purpose of generating electrical energy from geothermal energy in the Salavatlı Geothermal Field, the company is an investment company that meets the electrical energy needs of the liberalized electricity market within the framework of the Electricity Market Law No. 4628.
Being the first private sector geothermal power plant investment of Turkey and a source of honor for MB Holding, DORA-1 GPP (Geothermal Power Plant) with a capacity of 7.95 MWe started production in May 2006 and became a pioneer in the entire sector. Following the commissioning of DORA-1 GPP facility, systematic continuous reservoir observation was carried out in the geothermal field and 4 more geothermal power plant units were gradually put into operation to date. DORA-2 GPP 9.5 MWe – 2010, DORA-3A GPP 17 MWe – 2013, DORA-3B GPP 17 MWe – 2014, DORA-4 GPP 17 MWe – 2016, a total net installed power capacity of 68.5 MWe was reached.
The facilities that continue to produce electricity by Menderes Geothermal Elektrik Üretim A.Ş. today using geothermal, an environmentally friendly, renewable energy source, were designed and built using the latest air-cooled Binary System – Organic Rankine Cycle system, which is the most widely used technology in the field of electrical energy production from geothermal energy.
The heat energy of the geothermal fluid with an average temperature of 165°C, obtained from the production wells drilled by our company in the Salavatlı Geothermal Field in Aydın, is used for the purpose of electricity generation.
Geothermal Electricity Production
The geothermal fluid obtained from the wells is passed through heat exchangers for energy transfer and the energy of the geothermal fluid is transferred to the secondary fluid, Pentane. Pentane, which has a high vapor pressure at low temperatures, rotates turbines at high pressure and produces electrical energy through the generator. Pressurized Pentane Vapor, whose energy is converted in Pentane turbines, is directed to the Air Cooled Condenser (Condenser) and liquefies there. The liquefied Pentane is pumped back to the heat exchangers. The heat exchange of pentane is a closed cycle and is completely independent of the geothermal fluid. At the end of the process, the geothermal fluid, whose temperature drops to 70°C, is pumped back into the reservoir through reinjection wells. In this way, the protection of reservoir parameters and continuity of energy source are ensured.
Greenhouse System Integrated to DORA-2 GPP – Sultan Sera
The remaining waste heat energy after electrical energy is produced in the DORA-2 power plant is used for heating purposes in our Sultan Sera facilities. The first greenhouse, measuring 40,000 m² and commissioned in 2010, was heated with geothermal energy. In 2022, another greenhouse of the same size was put into operation next to this greenhouse, and the area heated with geothermal energy reached 80,000 m².
Sustainability
We aim to create value for our stakeholders with operational efficiency and continuous development in a structure that adopts sustainable growth principles. For this purpose, we carry out our activities with a high awareness of social and environmental issues and an inclusive approach. In order to create a better future in light of our values, we embrace sustainability at the Board level, direct all our activities with the awareness of our social and environmental responsibilities, and continue to implement exemplary projects and practices.
The main goal of all our economic activities is to increase social welfare by improving the quality of life of individuals. Through our activities, we act as a bridge for individuals to achieve a better life and directly contribute to efforts to create a sustainable future.
We have a structure that evaluates the economic, social and environmental impacts of our company and integrates the effects of the environment on our company into our corporate strategy. We create the necessary structure to measure and minimize our carbon footprint at regular intervals, and we are sensitive to environmental issues in all of our business processes. In this way, we are committed to contributing to sustainable development goals through our ethical, fair, transparent and lawful way of doing business in order to increase positive impacts. On the other hand, we have a design that creates, implements and continuously improves the necessary management systems to minimize our risks and manage them in the most accurate way. In this process, we prioritize the thoughts and expectations of our internal and external stakeholders and continue our work with a corporate structure that is aware of our economic, social and environmental responsibilities.
